WHAT DOES PSYCHIATRY DO?
Psychiatry deals with mental illnesses and disorders, the name of this doctrine is of greek origin, from the words ’soul’ and ’doctor’. It is concerned with disorders and clinical pictures concerning the superior functions of the operation of the central nervous system. These disorders and clinical pictures in the central nervous system are primarily caused by genetic factors and secondarily, by external, soc. environmental stimuli affecting the body. The causing factors vary for each clinical picture.
The symptomatic picture of each psychiatrical illness is also extremely variable.
During the evaluation of each patient, psychiatrists put mentally ill patients into internationally approved categories who are then given therapy based on the diagnosis. Depending on the given clinical picture, this therapy can be medication and psychotherapy, or it can be independent application of psychotherapy, respectively.
PSYCHOTHERAPY:
Psychotherapy is intervention using direct communication with the goal of healing. (Tringer) It is a helping connection, which is/are, according to Frank: -an emotionally stressful and confidential relationship with a trained person of help; -special, professional communication; -a conceptual frame; -a series of scripted, partially ritualized methods of behavior.
The philosophy of psychotherapy is acceptance without assumption.
Psychotherapy is a process resolved during therapist sessions, the number, frequency and duration of which depend on the current method.
Psychotherapies can be divided by many criteria, traditionally, they can be symptomatic, supportive, relieving or conflict-oriented, conforting or expectational methods.
